Targeted Ketamine Delivery
Description:
We are scheduled to embark on a unique first-in-human interdisciplinary study, to use targeted delivery of psychoactive compounds to specific brain regions, guided by personalized neuroimaging and utilizing noninvasive brain stimulation.
The Challenge:
Several psychedelic and non-psychedelic compounds are being studied and/or used for clinical purposes. However, such substances operate systemically and have nonspecific effects. Put differently, even though they are used for a specific target, they impact other brain and body processes and come with a substantial list of side effects.
Our Study:

To solve this problem, we joined forces with the laboratory of Dr. Raag Airan at Stanford Medicine’s Department of Radiology, to develop and test a way to deliver these compounds specifically to the target, thereby avoiding systemic effects.
In late 2024, we plan to start the first-ever trial in humans, to deliver ketamine to a region in the brain that participates in pain experiences. To achieve this goal, we will use an interdisciplinary approach combining neurochemistry, neurobiology, neuroimaging, and noninvasive brain stimulation.
